# Frattr — Brand & Positioning

> **Frattr** — from *fraternisera*: to form connections across circles.
> A European word, for a European way to organize.

## What it is

Frattr is the European alternative to Meetup — a network of local chapters
("fratter") where people gather IRL around shared interests without having to
register as a formal organisation.

Part of the Kalender.se suite. Same account as Kalender.se and Konversera.

## Etymology

"Frattr" is derived from **fraternisera** (v., to fraternize) — a word shared
across European languages:

| Language | Verb |
|----------|------|
| Swedish | fraternisera |
| English | fraternize |
| French | fraterniser |
| Spanish | fraternizar |
| Italian | fraternizzare |
| German | fraternisieren |
| Dutch | fraterniseren |

Root: Latin *frater* (brother) — same root as *fraternité* in the French
republican motto. The brand is about **forming bonds across circles**, not
about US-style college fraternities. When people ask, that's the answer.

## Positioning

**One-liner:** *Europe's answer to Meetup.*

**Tagline candidates:**
- "Community without the paperwork."
- "Fraternize locally. Organize loosely."
- "Where Europe fraternizes."

**Footer anchor:**
> *fraternisera (v.) — to form bonds across circles.*

### Differentiators vs Meetup

| | Meetup | Frattr |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | American | European |
| Data residency | US servers | EU-hosted, GDPR by default |
| Account | Isolated meetup.com login | Unified Kalender.se-suite account |
| Event pages | Behind login wall | Public, indexable on Kalender.se |
| Organizer cost | Paid subscription | Free |
| Host identity | Anonymous email account | Verified person (BankID / national eID) |
| Unit | "Group" | Fratter (tied to place + named host) |
| Relationship to orgs | Mixed with companies, recruiters | Explicitly *not* for registered entities |

## Information architecture

Three layers:

| Layer | Term | Example |
|-------|------|---------|
| Platform | **Frattr** | frattr.com |
| Umbrella brand | **Network** | Utvecklarpub |
| Local unit | **Fratter** | Utvecklarpub Skaraborg |

Reading: *"Utvecklarpub is a network on Frattr, with two fratter active —
Skaraborg and Göteborg."*

## Language & verbs

- **fratter** — the local unit (noun). Plural: fratter (or fratters in EN).
- **fraternisera / fraternize** — the verb, used sparingly, mostly in brand
  copy and footer etymology.
- "**Start a fratter**" — for would-be hosts.
- "**Join a fratter**" — for would-be members.
- "**Fratterträff** / **fratter meetup**" — the recurring IRL event.

Avoid: "frattra" as a made-up verb. Keep it to the noun + the etymological
verb.

## Vetting principle

Frattr is for **people**, not **organisations**.

> A fratter is a group of people, not an organisation. If you have a company
> registration number, you're not a fratter — you're an association, and we
> have a different product for that.

### Disqualifying

- Registered company / association / religious body (org.nr lookup)
- Party-political activity
- Commercial activity (selling services, recruiting)
- Single-brand fan clubs for a commercial entity

### Gating

- Host identifies with national eID: BankID (SE), MitID (DK), itsme (BE),
BankID (NO) — verified person, personal accountability.
- Per-country org registry check: Bolagsverket (SE), BRREG (NO), CVR (DK),
Handelsregister (DE) — automated where possible.
- Manual review of the first chapter of each new network for the first 12
months; after that, the network founder can approve new fratter in their
  own network.
- One-strike rule: sponsor pitches from stage, recruiting, selling → loss
of Frattr status. Codified in ToS.

### Migration path when a fratter outgrows informality

Clear off-ramp: *"When you're ready to become a proper organisation, we'll
help you migrate to a Kalender.se organisation account."* This keeps the
"informal" boundary honest and avoids people dodging the org line.

## Relationship to the Kalender.se suite

Frattr is not a separate product silo — it's an ingress into the same stack:

- **Events** on Kalender.se (public, subscribable calendars)
- **Discussion** via Konversera (one channel per fratter, one org per network)
- **Identity** shared across the suite (one login)
- **Discovery** on frattr.com (network catalogue) + each network's own domain
  (e.g. utvecklarpub.se)

Frattr is the *social container* for loosely-organized communities;
Kalender.se is the *event substrate* under it.

### Integration guardrails

- No standalone Frattr accounts or password login. Frattr uses the shared
Kalender.se/ISSO identity, with the same account as Kalender.se and
  Konversera.
- BankID-only application is allowed as a logged-out identity proof, but the
application must be linkable back to a Kalender.se account instead of
  becoming a separate Frattr identity.
- No separate Frattr event store for fratterträffar. A fratterträff is a
Kalender.se event on the fratter's calendar.
- Joining, RSVPing, or otherwise saving a fratterträff from Frattr must attach
that event to the signed-in user's Kalender.se calendar/agenda through the
  shared account.
- No separate discussion stack. Network and fratter discussion belongs in
Konversera/Kamunity, tied back to the same Kalender entity structure.
- Host/admin permissions should flow from Kalender.se users and entity
relations wherever possible, not from a Frattr-only role model.

Implementation plan: `docs/plans/frattr-kalender-integration-plan.md`.

## Flagship / proof of concept

**Utvecklarpub** (utvecklarpub.se) is the first Frattr network:

- Hub site listing all fratter
- Two fratter live: Skaraborg (active), Göteborg (starting)
- "Starta egen"-page for recruiting new host cities
- Built as a hand-crafted prototype; the pattern graduates into a proper
product template once a third fratter or second network appears.

## Productification triggers

| Trigger | Action |
|---------|--------|
| 3rd fratter in Utvecklarpub, OR 2nd network wants to launch | Build Frattr as a real product: network entity in admin, template-generated chapter sites, automated vetting flow |
| 3 productified networks running stably | Open public application, recruit community manager role |

Until then: hand-craft, learn, refine the vetting and the format.

## Open brand decisions

- Primary brand language on frattr.com — EN or SV first? Recommendation: EN
primary with SV parity, given European ambition.
- Visual identity — not yet defined. Utvecklarpub uses amber-on-dark as a
placeholder; Frattr itself needs its own visual signature.
- Verb usage — how hard to lean on "fraternize" in marketing copy without
sounding archaic. Recommendation: use it once per page max, as the
etymology anchor, not as a headline verb.
